CHENGDU, CHINA, January 10, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — 2022 was a crazy year for hackers and scammers as Global Web3 and AML Security Report 2022co-produced by beosinBuilder DAO, Legal DAO and Footprint, shows that over 167 major attacks on Web3, with a total loss of $3.6 billiona 47.4% increase from 2021. 10 security incidents lost during $100 million and losses from 21 incidents ranged from $10 million a $100 million.

In 2022, 12 chain-link bridge safety incidents caused a total loss of $1.89 billion, the largest loss among all types of projects. 5 lost chain bridge projects $100 million in a single incident: ronin ($624 million), BSC tab center ($560 million), wormhole ($326 million), Nomadic ($190 million) Y Harmony ($100 million). The attack types mainly included social engineering, private key compromise, and blockchain/contract vulnerabilities, etc.

20 blockchains have experienced major security incidents in 2022, with Ethereum being the top 3 by amount lost. BNB ChainY Solarium; and the top three by number of attacks are BNB Chain, Ethereum, and Solana.

Vulnerability exploits recorded the highest frequency and number of losses throughout the year. $1,458 million was lost due to exploiting vulnerabilities in 87 attacks.

$1,396 million of the stolen funds were transferred to Tornado Cash in 2022, representing 38.7% of all funds lost in attacks. Since Tornado Cash was sanctioned by the US OFAC in August, stolen funds transferred to the mixer have decreased significantly since the first half of the year.

Global cryptocrimes amounted to $13.76 billion by 2022 (excluding financial crimes), with money laundering representing $7.33 billionattacks/feats $3.6 billionpyramid schemes $1 billion and scams $830 million.

There were 243 rug pulls throughout 2022, for a total number of $425 million (excluding the FTX incident). Among them, a total of 8 resistant projects for more than $10 millionwhile 210 projects (approximately 86.4%) suffered accidents with amounts between $1K$1 million.

In 2022, the crypto market has seen a series of black swan events represented by Three Arrows Capital, Terra LUNA, and FTX, ending the year with TVL roughly 80% lower than its peak at the beginning of the year.

The past 2022 was a difficult year for the global Web3 security ecosystem and it will demand more and more urgent regulatory compliance for cryptocurrencies in 2023.
