The departure of John Carmack, a virtual reality pioneer who joined then-Facebook more than eight years ago, highlights the growing pains of a social media giant swinging hard into the metaverse.

“It’s been a struggle for me,” wrote Carmack, who called the shift to the immersive world of the metaverse one fraught with bureaucracy, diversity and safety concerns, and a “ridiculous number of people and resources.”
