This week, NFT Steez sat down with Cryptoys founder Will Weinraub to discuss the current role of the game and toys in regards to their integration with non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and Web3 as a whole.
Weintraub believes that the act of playing is “not restricted to children” and believes that as adults, “we still crave the element of play throughout our lives.” According to Weintraub, through the development of technology, “the game has evolved.” NFTs, especially in games, have highlighted this layer of ownership through gameplay.
Weintraub and Cryptoys theorize that “adults are just looking for ways to feel like children again.” Keeping the question of “how the game evolves” at the forefront, Weintraub says this is a fundamental tenet of his experience with game evolution.
From action figures to watching his kids build virtual worlds on Roblox, Weintraub emphasized just how profoundly the internet has catalyzed an evolution in gaming and video games. Players are no longer limited within the confines of their neighborhoods or geographic locations, according to Weintraub.
Weintraub stressed that the games’ content is “very, very different” and leans more towards “social gaming”, regardless of geographic barriers compared to games from decades past.
When asked about concerns about children’s and young adults’ comfort level with their digital interactions as opposed to their real-life social interactions, Weintraub acknowledged that the situation exists. However, she said that while it can “affect some people, it can also amplify some of that.”
The evolution of gaming seems to be turning towards a “social game” and, in many ways, could be designed to “improve communication skills,” Weintraub posits.
The future of gaming and cryptocurrencies
When asked about the role that cryptocurrencies play in gambling and tokenomics in blockchain gaming, Weintraub said that he strongly believes that they are an “important foundation of blockchain gaming.”
A level of “exuberance” was displayed when the play-to-win models were first created and tested and Weintraub praised the pioneers who initially navigated these uncharted waters. The sector is likely to develop “very fertile ground over the next year,” and Weintraub believes there will eventually be a “relaunch of token-based economies and gaming in a much healthier and more sustainable way.”

When talking about in-game tokens and their current use, Weintraub pointed out how the current state of the “Web3 economy is based on tokenization.” Regarding the next generation embracing and interacting with tokenization and ownership, Weintraub described how it is “incredibly important and in the right way.”
