Klaytn Foundation, the organization behind Klaytn, South Korea’s prominent Layer 1 blockchain (symbol: KLAY), has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Matter Labs, the team responsible for the development of the Ethereum Layer 2 zkSync Era scaling solution. This collaboration aims to advance the integration of zkSync Era’s Hyperchain implementations into Klaytn, marking a significant technology effort to embed a ZK-Rollups-powered Hyperchain layer on a non-Ethereum blockchain. The partnership will focus on the following areas of exploration:
- Research and development efforts to improve connectivity between Klaytn’s mainnet and Matter Labs’ zkSync Era Layer 2 blockchain, leveraging zero-knowledge proof technology.
- Development of new Layer 2 blockchain technology for Klaytn based on zkSync Era.
- Establish Klaytn as a Hyperchain infrastructure through Matter Labs’ ZK Stack implementation.
By establishing this partnership, the Klaytn Foundation and Matter Labs pave the way for technical cooperation. The collaboration is poised to accelerate the growth of the Klaytn ecosystem infrastructure as both entities work together to develop Layer 2 and Layer 3 implementations.
Matter Labs has been at the forefront of zero-knowledge proof-build technology, deploying zkSync version 1 in 2021. The company recently introduced zkSync Era, the second version of its platform to support EVM support. Notably, it is the first zkEVM to be released on the mainnet and accessible to the public. On June 26, Matter Labs announced the release of the ZK Stack, an open source and modular framework that enables the construction of custom L2 and L3 powered by ZK technology, also known as Hyperchains. These advancements contribute to the scalable performance, reliable security, and resiliency that zkSync Era offers, features that both the Klaytn Foundation and Matter Labs consider essential for Layer 2 and 3 protocols.
Dr. Sam Seo, representative director of the Klaytn Foundation, recognized the scalability challenges that lie ahead with the mass adoption of Klaytn. He expressed optimism about the partnership with Matter Labs, stating that it will accelerate the development of Zero-Knowledge Layer 2 technology for Klaytn’s mainnet. Dr. Seo emphasized the importance of maximizing scalability on Klaytn, a blockchain already known for its fast transaction processing time and low gas fees.
Marco Cora, Matter Labs’ senior vice president of business and ecosystems, highlighted the importance of working with the Klaytn Foundation to explore Hyperchain use cases. He described ZK rollups as the future of Ethereum scalability and emphasized the need to lay the correct architectural foundation from the start. Cora stated that building on the ZK Stack will give established Layer 1 blockchains like Klaytn two crucial characteristics: sovereignty and seamless connectivity to the Ethereum ecosystem. This connectivity will be achieved in a reliable, fast, cost-effective and secure way, opening up new opportunities for builders and users.
The deployment of Layer 2 and Layer 3 hyperchains based on zkSync Era’s ZK Stack will enable Klaytn builders and ecosystem participants to enjoy lower fees and higher performance. They can process transactions at these layers while benefiting from the full security provided by Klaytn through sending zero-knowledge proofs to the mainnet.
As the partnership progresses, the Klaytn Foundation and Matter Labs will share their joint project plans and research and development achievements through their respective social channels and communities.
