SINGAPORE — A “DJ” was on a large, illuminated stage playing a remix of Coldplay’s hit A Sky Full of Stars, and there were dozens of “people” dancing to the beat.

Gardens by the Bay’s famous Supertrees seemed to tower over the site, pulsing with pink neon lights. The ground also emanated light, and a building that looked like Marina Bay Sands loomed in the distance.

This concert would have cost the organizers an arm and a leg to organize, taking up virtually the entire Gardens by the Bay venue.

But the truth was, the organizers hadn’t spent a single penny renting the space, or physical props, for that matter.
