Apple’s development work on its AR/VR headset is nearing completion, but the company may not announce the device at WWDC next week. This is why.


Apple It will reportedly not be announcing its much-rumored virtual reality/augmented reality headset and realityOS at the Worldwide Developers Conference next week. The news follows a recent report that the device could debut this year as part of Apple’s plans to compete with Meta. However, a report last month suggested that the device has been delayed and will only be available in the first quarter of next year. Haitong International Securities analyst Jeff Pu’s report also stated that Apple plans to sell between one and 1.5 million units of the new device in its first year.

Apple’s upcoming AR/VR headset has been the subject of heavy rumors over the past year, with various reports claiming that the company has been working on such a device for a long time. While Apple has been playing its cards carefully, that doesn’t stop rumors from churning out stories every few days. The multitude of leaks have revealed some interesting aspects of the upcoming device, including the fact that it will be powered by so-called ‘realityOS’. However, most of the critical features and functionality of the device are still under wraps.

TF International Securities analyst and trusted tipster Ming-Chi Kuo has reclaimed that Apple is unlikely to announce its AR/VR headset at the next WWDC event. He also offered a reason for Apple’s decision. Since Apple is not yet ready to launch the device on the market, an announcement at this stage will allow competitors to copy its features and flood the market with knock-off devices before Apple can get its product on store shelves. Kuo also backed up Jeff Pu’s earlier claim that the device will likely launch next year instead of 2022.


Apple to announce ‘realityOS’ alongside mixed reality headsets

Some days ago, by Bloomberg Mark Gurman reported that Apple recently showed off the new mixed reality headset to members of the company’s board of directors, suggesting that the product could be close to launch. So if Apple decides not to announce the device at next week’s WWDC, it could debut at the iPhone 14 launch event later this year.

Along with the new mixed reality headset, Apple is also expected to introduce the so-called realityOS that will power the new device. The company has reportedly registered the ‘realityOS’ trademark in several countries, suggesting that it could be the name of Apple’s new operating system that powers AR/VR headsets.

Meanwhile, along with the mixed reality headset, Apple is reportedly working on a pair of lightweight augmented reality glasses. However, reports suggest that it won’t be ready for mass production for at least a few more years. According to previous reports, AppleAugmented reality glasses may not hit the market before 2025.
