Nanjing University of Information Science Technology has taken an important step in its quest to become a hub for distributed ledger technology (DLT) by renaming its Information Technology department to Metaverse.

Under the School of Artificial Intelligence, the department changed its name to the Department of Metaverse Engineering after prior deliberation by members of the institution’s governing council. Dean of the School of Artificial Intelligence Zhigeng Pan noted that the decision was the first of its kind in mainland China that a college be named after the metaverse.

Details of the newly named department’s curriculum remain unclear, but Zhigeng noted that it will train master’s, doctoral, and post-doctoral students in different areas of the metaverse. Gleaning…
