Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates does not seem convinced of the importance of Web3 and the metaversesaying that the technology is not “revolutionary”.

Responding to a question from a Reddit user about what current technology has the potential that the Internet had in the year 2000, the business mogul said: “AI is the most important. I don’t think Web3 was that big or the metaverse stuff alone was revolutionary, but the AI is pretty revolutionary.”

During the ‘Ask Me Anything’ (AMA) session, in which the dean of technology answered questions about climate change, veganism and infinite frivolity (you haven’t read it), repeatedly referred to AI as the most exciting field for technological innovation today.

When asked what he thought of the ChatGPT chatbot, he said the product “gives a glimpse of what’s to come.”

“I am impressed with all this focus and the rate of innovation,” he added.

The philanthropist also spoke about the potential applications of AI to his own humanitarian work.

“Thinking in the context of the Gates Foundation, we want to have tutors that help kids learn math and stay interested,” he said. “We want medical help for people in Africa who can’t access a doctor.”

Bill Gates, Microsoft and Web3

In late 2021, Gates predicted that most virtual meetings would transition from 2D platforms like Zoom and Teams to the metaverse within two to three years. He added that he was impressed by how VR technology enhances the remote meeting experience.

But the billionaire has also been clear on his distaste for cryptocurrencies and NFTssaying that they are “100% based on the major fool theory”.

Meanwhile, Microsoft, with which Gates is still involved although he doesn’t run the company on a day-to-day basis, has been moving closer to the metaverse.

Last year it was one of 35 companies along with Meta, Sony and Alibaba to found the Metaverse Standards Forum. The idea is to coordinate cooperation for an “open and inclusive metaverse”.

The company has also been working to make Gates’ prediction about virtual meetings come true by making its meeting apps available on Meta devices.
