At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2023, companies with a focus on the metaverse provided product demos that enhanced the virtual reality (VR) experience by including the ability to smell. According to a recent article by consulting firm McKinsey & Company, the metaverse has the potential to create $5 trillion in value by 2030.
However, the paper noted that for the metaverse to succeed, it would need a better-developed human side that provides its users with happy experiences.
It is possible that the incorporation of the senses of smell and touch in virtual reality experiences, such as those shown at the recent CES, is one of these triggers.
An article published by Fortune, one of the companies, called OVR Technology, demonstrated a helmet that had a container for eight different fragrances that can be combined to produce a wide variety of scents.
According to recent reports, the virtual reality headset is expected to be available later in the year 2023.
An earlier version that was used for fragrance merchandising gives customers the ability to smell various places, from the scent of roasting marshmallows to the scent of a bed of roses.
Extended reality will soon be combined with business, entertainment, social connection, education and wellness, according to Aaron Wisniewski, CEO of OVR Technology. Wisniewski believes that this will happen in the near future.
Aurora Townsend, an executive at FireFlare Games, recently disclosed that her company plans to develop a virtual reality (VR) dating app as long as the technology required to do so is widely available on the market. The software would also integrate immersive sensations such as touch, according to Townsend. In the meantime, customers may not be very enthusiastic about the new development.
CES attendee Ozan Ozaskinli tested various haptics, noting that the technology is still a long way from being practical.
On the other hand, the technology expert said that it has the potential to be included in online meetings because consumers can really feel something through the use of technology.
In the year 2022, blockchain technology and the metaverse were the talk of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Through their exhibits, companies like Samsung, which announced an NFT platform, showcased the latest advancements in blockchain technology and the metaverse.
