Rumors have surrounded Apple Inc.‘s AAPL highly anticipated mixed reality headset, which is expected to launch next year. It now appears that the tech giant is using the names “realityOS” and “xrOS” internally.
What happened: Apple seems to have two different AR/VR platforms: one based on iOS and the other on macOS.
The name of the mixed reality headset software, “realityOS,” which Apple reportedly replaced with “xrOS,” could co-exist internally, according to 9To5Mac.

According to the report, the company’s engineers use the name “realityOS” for the iOS-based platform and “xrOS” for the macOS-based platform.
At this point, it’s not clear if the platforms serve different purposes.
It’s also likely that “xrOS” could run on a new companion device made exclusively to control Apple headphones.
