A hint of the Apple AR/VR headset was just found in the new Apple Device app for Windows, thanks to an eagle-eyed Twitter user. Aaron (opens in a new tab) (via our colleagues at iMore (opens in a new tab)).
Apple just released new Apple Music, Apple TV, and Apple Devices apps for the latest Windows 11 Insider Preview Build, the trio of apps designed to replace the aging iTunes platform that has long been outdated within Apple’s own ecosystem. . It’s in the Apple Devices app code that Aaron found references to RealityOS and xrOS, the two operating systems rumored to be used with Apple’s headphones.
Well look what we found here… #RealityOS https://t.co/mV4Qnkrw8b pic.twitter.com/XRWYBnPqiDJanuary 11, 2023
There’s no mention of the headset itself, but the two software packages match the names given by previous leaks.
Rumored features for Apple’s first dedicated virtual/augmented reality product include dual 4K displays, an Apple M2 chip as a processor, and auto-adjusting lenses. Less appealing is the claim that you’ll need a separate battery to run, rather than using cells built into the earphones, as is the rumored $3,000 price tag.
However, there are still some gaps in the rumors. For example, we don’t yet know how it will control the headphones. There have been patents for a ring-based controller that can track your fingers and hands, but it’s strange that there isn’t anything more concrete leak-o-sphere.
The headphones could arrive this year according to rumors, though the earliest they’ll possibly appear is Apple’s likely spring event in March, with sales only opening later in the year. For now, though, if you’re a Windows 11 user, you can at least try Apple’s new apps on your machine. Maybe you’ll find more evidence of AR/VR headsets while you’re at it.
