Neal Mohan, a Web3-friendly executive, has been named the new CEO of Google-owned YouTube. Susan Wojcicki resigned from her position earlier this week.
After nine years at the helm of YouTube, Wojcicki said on February 16 that he would be stepping down and starting a “new chapter” focused on his family, his health and his personal endeavors. During his tenure, he was responsible for a number of important achievements, one of which was the implementation of the revenue sharing model.
Going forward, she will continue to serve as an adviser to Alphabet, which is the parent company of Google.
Mohan served as YouTube’s chief product officer before being promoted to CEO. During his tenure in that role, he oversaw the controversial removal of the video dislike button, the introduction of YouTube Shorts to compete with TikTok, and the launch of YouTube Music.
In the context of Web3, Mohan presented some preliminary plans in February 2022 to integrate a large number of new features. These included content experiences based on the Metaverse and content tokenization through the use of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). These plans were brought forward to the chagrin of the community who despised NFTs at the time.
Mohan stressed in particular that NFTs can provide a new method for artists to communicate with their audiences and establish other sources of income. He said that this was one of the most important aspects of NFTs. As examples, he suggested the possibility for content providers to tokenize their movies, photos, artwork, and experiences.
“Web3 also paves the way for the creation of new possibilities. We believe that emerging technologies such as block chain and NFTs can make it possible for artists to cultivate more meaningful interactions with their respective audiences. In a post he made to his blog on February 10, 2022, he predicted that “together, they could cooperate on new ventures and make money in ways not previously imagined.”
Plans related to Web 3 have yet to come to fruition, even though they were supposed to possibly be implemented the year before. However, since Mohan now runs the company, another push may be coming in the near future.
In the wake of the announcement that Mohan would take over as YouTube CEO, there has been a surprising lack of Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt (FUD) emanating from vocal NFT skeptics on Twitter. These people are usually quick to criticize anything to do with reports of major tech connections.
