The metaverse refers to the newer layer of the Internet. It is made accessible by using special hardware. In a variation, this hardware (usually glasses and/or headsets) creates an immersive 360-degree experience (virtual reality) and can be combined with physical sensations (haptics). In another version, the hardware allows users to see the everyday physical world, but with an overlay of graphics and/or data (augmented reality).
