Following the success of hosting one of the biggest Web3 hackathons six months ago, Moonshot Commons launched its winter hackathon themed “Rethink, Rethink and Recharge” on December 17, 2022.

This weekend, Moonshot Commons, a global community of Gen Z Web3 builders backed by more than 10 top-tier investors, kicked off its biannual hackathon, where hundreds of participants develop Web3-themed projects in three weeks and battle under the reflectors.

The hackathon is co-organized by KuCoin Community Chain (KCC), Blockchain Academy, RSS3, Aspecta, Hkust Crypto Fintech Labs, IOSG Ventures, Signum Capital, ZettaBlock, Mirror World, and other partners.

From December 19, 2022 to January 9, 2023, 60 teams selected from hundreds will be challenged to “rethink, reframe, and recharge” and build in fields like infrastructure, open finance, emerging languages, developer onboarding tools, and decentralized society.

Throughout the three-week event, all founders and investors are also invited to attend more than 10 “closed-door workshops” led by industry mentors.

On January 14, 2023, 20 teams will be selected to participate in the final battle arena “Apollo Demo Day” and showcase their creativity and innovation to more than 50 VCs, funds, and media companies from around the world.

All Apollo Demo Day participants will also receive the Moonshot Hacker SBT and the opportunity to join the Moonshot community as members of Lot 5, with access to support from program mentors, alumni and peer entrepreneurs from “day 0 to ∞”.

Building on previous success

523 teams participated in the Moonshot Common summer hackathon, making the event one of the largest Web3 hackathons in the world.

Within a month, selected teams were invited to nine closed-door workshops, more than 60 group office hours, and pitching opportunities to more than 50 funds and VCs.

YC-backed Chataverse founder Leo, a Moonshot batch 4 member, said: “I think what makes Moonshot Commons special is the people – everyone I met and interacted with is sincere and visionary.

Leo credits the hackathon for accelerating the growth of his startup team: “Each workshop featured at the hackathon is carefully curated and customized for startup teams. The mentors came up with many relevant and practical suggestions.”

Many members of the Moonshot community have also experienced the “zero to one” journey with Moonshot Commons, most notably Kevin, co-founder of Bain Capital-backed Curio; Jack, founder of HashKey-backed Aspecta; Potter, co-founder of Ethsign, backed by Sequoia Capital; Luffy, GGV-backed founder of Reborn; Steven, founder of SaaS3 backed by Big Brain Holdings; and Leo, co-founder of YC-backed Chataverse.

Where Gen Z learns, builds and scales

In addition to hosting their biannual hackathons, the Gen Z Web3 creator community hosts events, such as Mafia Mastermind sessions (past speakers include the founders of StepN, EthSign, Dodo, Mask Network, and RSS3), brings together industry leaders through the Fellowship program and maintains a talent network led by more than 50 campus fellows from more than 30 universities in the United States, Singapore, China, and Europe.

MetaMail founders Suneal and Colin, who won first place in ETH Shanghai as members of the Lot 4 Moonshot community, said:

“At Moonshot Commons, we met an immensely knowledgeable and caring group of mentors and trusted, hard-working friends. We really find a sense of belonging in this community dedicated to the founders of our generation.”

Since its inception in 2021, Moonshot Commons has rapidly scaled to become a global builder community for Generation Z. With a network of over 6,000 members, 200 founders, 50 mentors, and partnerships with academia, Moonshot Commons has incubated a more than 30 founders, raising a total of more than $100 million.

Thinking in the future

Echoing the hackathon theme, the Moonshot Commons team believes it’s time for Web3 founders, investors, and the entire community to rethink, reframe, and recharge.

The founding team expanded the team’s vision to Cointelegraph:

“In the midst of the Web3 tipping point, we need to rethink the narrative of the crypto world and reflect on the line between hype and necessity.

We need to reaffirm the spirit of Web3, such as decentralization, community, and ownership.

As Web3 practitioners and believers, we are confident that the development of the industry will spiral upward. After the storm passes, we need to recharge and continue to preach and build.

With Moonshot, our goal is to become the public educational infrastructure for smart, rudimentary, globally-minded builders, founders, and researchers in the crypto space.”
