EpicGames introduces Verse, a programming language for the Metaverse. Verse aims to engage the community in rich language. With this, Verse joins programming languages such as Clarity, Solidity, Curry, Mercury and Rust web3.
Verse is an open source (like Curry and Mercury) declarative functional logic language that has an unusual static type system (types are first class values). The verse is forgiving, as everything is evaluated at the end only when it is “done”. It cannot be strict since it includes call by value (functions can be called before the argument has a value). Instead of using nomads, it has an effects system.
Verse is extremely ambitious, stretching from end users to professional developers with transactional memory at scale and strong stability guarantees. Verse is scalable to run code and supports billions of users. Its compile time guarantees that a model includes the API of the previous version. Verse is extensible and can be learned as a first language, improving over time without cracking the code. Future Epic Games projects include MaxVerse and ShipVerse. Previously, NVIDIA came up with a real-time graphics collaboration platform called Omniverse.

According to developer analytics company SlashData, around 60% of Web3 developers entered the industry last year, which is an all-time high; it still represents only a small part of the world’s 31.1 million software engineers as of Q1 2022. This becomes a bigger problem due to a lack of knowledge of the specialized programming languages used to create smart contracts on Solana and Ethereum cryptocurrencies.
Although Rust is coming fast, Solidity is currently the most widely used Web3 language, with over 4,000 developers using it every month on the Ethereum blockchain alone. Rust is used with cryptocurrency and blockchain and delivers the fastest code. In the Bitcoin Web3 environment, Clarity is specifically designed for building smart contracts and decentralized applications, or dApps. Now Verse joins the league of Web3 programming languages.
