China has once again locked down one of its cities to contain the spread of COVID-19, as per its zero-COVID policy. This time, it is the Zhengzhou District iPhone manufacturing center that was shut down.
The lockdown affected around a million residents of the Zhengzhou district. All residents were ordered to stay home starting Monday, with the one exception that people who were going to get a COVID test were allowed out. All non-essential businesses have been closed following government orders.
This is just one of many cases where the Chinese government has forced lockdowns in the name of the zero COVID policy. Many manufacturing hubs in Shanghai and Beijing have also faced the wrath of politics, including iPhone maker Foxconn.
China’s policy has reduced its own manufacturing capacity at high cost. It has been directly incorporated for supply chain issues around the world, as the world enters its third year of the pandemic. There are no signs of loosing focus as Chinese President Xi Jinping says strict rules protect people’s lives.
