Apple has long been rumored to be working on an AR/VR headset. But most of its important details came to light earlier this year, with sources revealing which screen it will use and the operating system it will be based on. And now, we’re hearing new details about the OS name of the AR/VR headset.
According to a Bloomberg report, Apple has finalized the name of its upcoming AR/VR headset operating system. Rather than go with “realityOS,” which Apple was using internally, the Cupertino tech company decided to call it “xrOS.” “xr” stands for extended reality. The report also suggests that the name change to “xrOS” will “allow the headset to stand out more.”
“Extended reality” would mean it will be a mixed reality headset rather than a standalone AR or VR headset, similar to Microsoft’s HoloLens headset. Mixed reality provides users with a real world environment along with virtual objects with which they can interact.
Previously, rumors suggested that FaceTime would be one of the most exciting features of Apple’s mixed reality headset, with Memojis and SharePlay being central elements of that experience. Apple is also rumored to be developing new versions of existing apps like Maps and Messages for headphones. And to make sure there are enough third-party apps when it’s released, Apple is creating a Software Development Kit for developers.
While all of these rumors add to the excitement, it’s unclear when Apple’s mixed reality headset will be announced. Although Apple is keeping its mouth shut about the launch, the tech giant is expected to make at least a few announcements about the headphones at its WWDC event in 2023, giving developers plenty of time to build apps for them.
