The long-awaited Apple AR/VR headset may finally start production early next year, according to a new report from DigiTimes. (opens in a new tab).
The headset, currently codenamed N301 but possibly titled Reality One or Reality Pro, is apparently scheduled to go into production in March 2023, based on its current manufacturing validation status. Supposedly, this will be done exclusively by manufacturer Pegatron, rather than a combination of device manufacturers like Apple uses for other devices like the iPhone.
Although we don’t have any official confirmation of the earphones yet, Apple has apparently been busy working on validation tests for these earphones. DigiTimes also says that Apple is at least considering using clean room production for this inaugural AR/VR project, suggesting that Apple is spending a lot of time and money to make sure the headset is built to the highest possible standards. That’s always important, but especially when launching a new product category for a $2 billion company.
The super-careful manufacturing also makes sense when you factor in other rumors about the headset’s price and availability. Stocks will apparently be very limited, with less than a million units produced in its first year, according to the new DigiTimes report. As for the cost, we can expect to spend up to $2,000 or more.
