Apple’s long-rumored set of AR/VR headsets is expected to include a monthly subscription for users, TrendForce reported.
The report outlined the growing sales trends for AR/VR devices and forecast that Apple’s headset could be consumer-oriented with a price tag close to Microsoft’s HoloLens at $3,500.
According to the report, the company could charge its customers a monthly subscription fee for its software service.
Apple is believed to join the competition after “strong Oculus and Microsoft product shipments” but “new product launches this year by Apple, Meta and Sony may be delayed and will not add significant growth to the overall market for AR/VR for now.”
Although it has not been detailed what kind of headset-specific software service Apple will offer, the AR/VR headsets will be primarily aimed at gaming, media consumption, and communication.
According to Bloomberg, the device is even rumored to run on “rOS” or “RealityOS”, codenamed “Oak”.
Although the device has been rumored since 2017, its operating system was only recently confirmed after references were found in App Store upload logs and Apple’s open source code. The Bloomberg report believes that the headphones will be delayed until 2023.
