Comics rights owner DC has been minting NFTs for a while, but mostly collectible characters. It has evolved into selling the comics as the DC Collectible Comic (DC3) NFT through its DC Universe, beginning on October 27 with a Superman comic.
However, Batman: The Legacy Cowl #1 has already launched as its first collectible comic on the blockchain. It was available exclusively to existing ‘Bat Cowl’ NFT holders, although some owners are reselling them.
After officially launching his stopsingle market earlier this year, its initial drop in April was for the ‘Bat Hood Collection‘ with over 200,000 collectibles influenced by 83 years of Batman. The market currently still lists over 11,000 NFTs from this collection, starting at a price of $548.
In contrast to the massive Bat Cowl drop, Superman #1 comic will only have 3,000 available at a price of $9.99.
While DC released other digital collectibles after the Bat Cowl Collection, DC3 is their latest attempt to make comics readable on a digital platform.
In 2021, in celebration of DC Fandome 2021, DC’s worldwide online fan event, DC released digital collectibles for free, in partnership with Palm. All NFTs, including the most recent ones, are minted on the Palm network, an Ethereum sidechain. In December 2021, Palm NFT Studio announced that it had raised $27 million in its Series B funding, led by Microsoft’s M12 venture fund.
Meanwhile, DC’s main competitor Marvel has collaborated with app VeVe Digital Collectibles to sell collectibles and NFT comics for fans of the Spider franchise. NFTs of DC characters have also been available on its app since 2021, when the comics firm entered into a licensing agreement with VeVe.
