What is the metaverse: where are we and where are we headed

Ever since Facebook changed its name to Meta on October 28, 2021, the nebulous concept that inspired the new name has been a hot topic of discussion.

While it may seem like the metaverse is a product of Meta’s wild ambition, that’s not the case at all. Some would argue that the metaverse that Mark Zuckerberg spent so much time describing during the Connect 2021 conference keynote already exists, while others see it as the next evolution of the Internet known as Web3 or Web 3.0.

In part, that’s because the metaverse means different things to different people, but it’s also because the lines between the virtual world and reality have become blurred and unrecognizable.
