RealityOS, Apple’s rumored name for the operating system that runs on its rumored virtual and augmented reality headsets, has been spotted in a trademark filing. Bloomberg The “reality operating system” brand was first reported in 2017 and references to the name have also appeared in the tech giant’s software.

The trademark application was not officially filed by Apple. However, it is common practice for Big Tech to file trademark applications under unique company names, Realityo Systems LLC in this case, to maintain anonymity and hide any connections.

The trademark application is the latest proof that Apple is close to announcing the long-rumored headphones. It follows reports that the company’s board had tested the wearable. Bloomberg reported in January that the headset was originally scheduled to launch later this year after an announcement at the developer conference. However, that could change due to development challenges. The headset could now launch in 2023.

The trademark document refers to “laptop computer hardware” and relates to “design and development of computer hardware, software, peripherals, and computer and video games.” There has been speculation about the headset’s functionality over the years, but reports suggest it would offer a mix of virtual reality and augmented reality experiences.

Ortolani reports that Realityo did not appear to have a public presence, suggesting that it was a shell company used by Apple to hide its involvement. Apple had taken the same approach, using the shell company name Yosemite Research LLC to trademark macOS update names like Yosemite and Big Sur, according to reports.

Both Yosemite Research LLC and Realityo Systems LLC are registered to the same address, implying that Apple was behind them.

The apps were discovered days before Apple’s annual developer conference on June 6, sparking speculation that the headphones could be announced during the keynote.
